NetBackup 5.0 dovetails with the outfit's new strategy by integrating
with CommandCentral Service, which the company created last year to deliver software as a utility, and Data Lifecycle Manager, which provides data archiving, retention and retrieval.
Glenn Groshans, director of product marketing, said the refresh was
important because mid-level businesses often require software capable
of covering large scale IT environments and data centers.
"This release is about bringing enterprise strength in data protection to the mid-sized market," Groshans told internetnews.com. "It's geared to meet the pain points experienced in large enterprises wanting more of everything, including more resources and higher service levels."
Groshans said NetBackup 5.0 is geared to help mid-size businesses cope with the explosion of data growth, despite their limited staff and expanding businesses.

The product provides limitless client protection and tape storage
support to protect additional systems and databases. Other enterprise capabilities include disk staging, synthetic backup and automated disaster recovery.
For example, because it employs technology from Veritas Volume Replicator, NetBackup Server automatically replicates data to a safe site.
The latest release effectively completes Veritas' backup and recovery refresh. It also migrates to the company's high-end backup package, NetBackup Enterprise Server, which was refreshed last November and preserves data for large enterprises and corporate data
centers. The company's entry product, Backup Exec, was also refreshed
in November.
NetBackup Server works with UNIX, Windows, Linux and NetWare
environments to
appeal to a broad base of customer operating systems.
The software is available now and begins at $2000; customers using
Veritas NetBackup Business Server can migrate to NetBackup Server free.
